DescriptionYellowstone National Park reaches its peak in beauty in the fall. The elk are bugling, wolves are howling, grizzlies are scrounging for their last meals before hibernation. Yellowstone's Northwest Corner is bustling with activity. This trip will feature the less traveled season of late summer/early fall in Our camp will be located on the upper Gallatin River. Lewis and Clark named this river when they crossed it over 150 miles from here. Albert Gallatin was the Secretary of the Treasury as they made their famous journey, and this river is his namesake. We will camp about five miles below Gallatin Lake the headwaters of this river, on a beautiful winding portion of the river. At this site years ago, my guests and I got to see two bull elk challenge each other vocally in a bugling contest for a harem of cows. They snorted, thrashed small trees, and pawed the ground, all the while bugling and squealing for dominance of the herd. It was quite a sight. A six mile ride will take us up to 9200 feet and a breathtaking view from Bighorn Pass. From this vantage point, we can see the entire northern portion of Yellowstone National Park. Often in the small valley below the pass, wildlife graze on the last green grasses of the summer season. Big Horn Sheep and Mountain Goats frequent the area as well. Because we are near a grizzly bear management area, in the evenings we will discuss how the Park Service's historic management of wildlife and the growing number of grizzly bears.
